Sappho (610 b.c.e) was an Ancient Greek poet from Eresos or Mytilene on the island of Lesbos. She was, and is still known for her lyric poetry, written to be sung while accompanied by music. In ancient times, Sappho was widely regarded as one of the greatest lyric poets and was given names such as the "Tenth Muse" and "The Poetess" by none-other-than Plato.
Tonight I’ve Watched the Moon takes text from several of Sappho’s surviving poems and fragments and weaves them together into a song of awe, desperation, and triumph through love captured by the light of moon. Text by Sappho was deliberately chosen to showcase that the LGBTQ+ community is an ancient community full of love, light, and hardship: much like our moon.
Lyrics
Tonight I’ve watched the moon And the Pleiades go down
The night is now half gone Youth goes, and I
Tonight I've watched the moon
And Aphrodite overcomes me
With longing
...
Oh, stars near the lovely moon Cover their own bright faces When she is roundest
And lights the Earth in silver Tonight I’ve watched the moon And Aphrodite overcomes me With longing
...
Now in my heart I see clearly
A beautiful face shining back at me
Stained with love
...
Xeperase (ksɛpɛɾɐsɛ) me (mɛ) (overcome me)
...
Eros, giver of pain
Eros, coming from heaven
Dear Lady, spare my heart from pains and sorrow And all my heart longs for fulfill
Eros, giver of pain
Eros, release me
Tonight I’ve watched the moon
