Storm Watch evokes the development of a major storm from the onset of tornado
sirens to the ebb and flow of violent rain as the storm develops. Use of extended
saxophone techniques such as aeolian sounds, key clicks, multiphonics, growl,
flutter tongue, and slap tongue are executed in ways that depict wind, rainfall,
thunder, and sirens to capture both a realistic and artistic interpretation of the
natural elements. This piece came out of reminiscing about my childhood watching
storms roll in on my family’s front porch at night and the oddly pleasant harmonies
that occurred every week during the overlap in siren testing from nearby towns.
