For Love and Loss follows the motions of falling in and out of love from the end of
one relationship to the end of another. Distinct sections often marked by
ritardando, tempi markings, and new repeated ideas that illustrate the five stages
of the emotional process shown in this piece: loneliness, comfort, questioning,
unraveling, and fallout. This wide range of emotions is also demonstrated in the
expansive use and importance of the piano’s range as well as the stark contrast in
dynamics from beginning to end. This piece was largely inspired by minimalism and
my own experiences with love thus far, although the experience detailed here is not
mine alone.
